My Dogs
After my old dogs died last year, I just couldn’t stand not having a dog around the house so we started visiting the shelters looking for a new member of our family. In January, we found a Jack Russell Terrier that was just a great dog. Only one problem…he had heartworms. We adopted him anyway and named him Zippy, for obvious reasons. He went through 8 weeks of heartworm treaments ~ four of those he had to be crated 24/7. At the end of the 8 weeks, there was still some evidence in his xrays of the heartworms but we decided to start letting him be a dog anyway. Eight weeks is a looooooonnnnnnnnnggggggg time for a JRT to be confined.
He is just a perfect dog now and we make a daily appearance at the dog park where he has a ton of doggy friends.
UPDATE ON ZIPPY!!!!! We had yet another heartworm test on 7/24 and he is FINALLY, COMPLETELY heartworm free! We are so thankful that he came through all the treatment with flying colors ~ it was a long 6 months but no more coughing and hacking and worrying about him having a heart attack. I can’t stress enough how important it is to make sure your dogs have heartworm protection especially if you live in a place where there are mosquitos all year long like we do.
Here is Zippy laying on the back of the couch:
Being cute:
Now we also take care of DD’s dog which is a Jack Russell/Boxer mix. She is a love bug but got such a hard start to life. When DD adopted her, the rescue people said that she had been abused and starved. She has come such a long way since then and we love having her although Zippy drives her to distraction sometimes. She is a lazy dog and ZIppy NEVER sleeps during the day ~ hence the reason she gets cranky.
Here is Zoey:
And here are the two together:
Pool Party!
And for good measure ~ here are a couple of pictures of my old dogs who I miss very much! Kona is the golden and she died of lymphoma at age 11 and Skipper is the lab and he died of a brain tumor at age 9.

Just love to hear about others’ JRT’s–ours is a tri-color 4-yr old male and he is pretty much full of vim and vigor, also a real lover boy. My shadow when I am home and loves to go wherever we go. Bless you for rescuing these “best friends”!

I adore your dogs. Lost my Golden a month ago and I had a black lab before that. I’d get a shelter dog except it would outlive me.
I found you reading Moose Munch recipes.
Where are the cashews and almonds?
I’m going to try to make it but I get Merkens chocolate at a cake and candy supply store. You do not need to add Crisco to it. It melts int he microwave like a dream. I put it into molds for my grandkids.
I just had my first Mose Munch in a Harry and David basket my son sent me for my birthday!

I know just how you feel about losing your babies. My husband and I had a miniature Shih-Tzu (Boots) who had to be euthanized at age 8-1/2. (He came from a “bad” breeder and we felt like we rescued him, even though we had never had a dog inside our home. We got him at 6 weeks and thought we would lose our minds when we lost him in June 2006. We chose not to get another because my husband has Parkinson’s disease. I have my hands full taking care of him; although I know another Shih-Tzu would really keep him company. God bless.

Nancy ~ I will never understand people who just dump animals by the side of the road. How hard is it to take them to a shelter. It just burns me up.
Both dogs are really spotty ~ it cracks us up.
Thanks for stopping by!

K.M.~ We lived in Hawaii for awhile and we loved going to Kona so that’s why we named her that.

The picture of Zippy made me check out your blog. We rescued a dog that I always thought was at least part Jack Russell, but I never knew for sure. But Gabby looks so much like Zippy that I am sure now. Even down to the spots on her underside!! She was being dumped by the side of the road when my husband rescued her. She is a joy.
No dog will ever replace Kona and Skipper, I know, but these two new ones look like wonderful dogs. I hope you have many happy years with them.

So sorry about Kona and Skipper. They were beautiful babies! So glad you were able to adopt your two new babies! Looks like you are taking wonderful care of them, and having fun!
I know how it is to lose one of your babies to a horrible disease, our beloved Harley, passed away last year on July 4th from DCM. I have dedicated a lens to him and the disease if you care to stop by. http://www.squidoo.com/dogs-are-family-too
P.S. I love the name Kona, I went to Hawail for the first time this past year with my husband and just fell in love with everything there!
